INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

11 - 13 JULY 2011

Towards Valid Assessment: Efficiency, Relevance and Social Consequence

NORTH WEST UNIVERSITY

Venue:

Quest Conference Estate, Curie Boulevard, Vanderbijlpark

FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT and CALL FOR PAPERS

Departmental officials, principals, teachers, academics, researchers, and any other persons interested in the field of educational evaluation and assessment are invited to share their experience in this regard .

The heart of education remains with the development of the child, both individual cognitive development manifesting in greater knowledge of core subjects, and social development, manifesting in greater ability for action in the world about them. The primary aim of the teacher, the school, and government structures is to support the development of all children to the best of their potential.

Assessment for different purposes may support this aim in different ways; focussed evaluation of classroom interactions, formative and diagnostic assessment, as well as end of term summative assessment each contribute to the work of the teacher in different ways.

Across the globe, over the last 15 years, there has been a move to large scale assessment studies, and within country system assessment programmes, the purpose of which is to provide education departments with information on various aspects of the system.

The purpose of this Conference is to consider how various types of assessment might contribute to the varied purposes of education. The aim of the conference however, is to critically appraise different aspects with a view to improve assessment in  support of both knowledge acquisition and social development.

Assessment should not be seen in isolation, but in the context of curriculum and learning.

ASEASA seeks to promote positive policy perspectives in order to improve assessment practice in schools, colleges and universities.
