Dear ASEASA  Member or Associate

It is a great pleasure for me to send the first newsletter from ASEASA to you. This newsletter in itself is an achievement for ASEASA, since it represents the further implementation of one of the key strategies which the Executive Committee of ASEASA has decided on during one of our recent meetings. These key strategies entail the following:

  1. To send to you regular e-mail communications with relevant articles on a weekly basis (as we are already doing);
  2. To upgrade and improve ASEASA’s  website  (current address: www.aseesa-edu.co.za);
  3. To introduce a monthly newsletter, of which this one is the first.  (Since we have not decided on a specific name for the newsletter yet, we invite you to forward some suggestions to us for consideration.);
  4. To arrange conferences on an annual basis in order to ensure that our members, who represent a range of sectors, receive the latest available information and knowledge in the Assessment and Evaluation sector.

This newsletter will be forwarded to you on a monthly basis and the purpose of the newsletter is as follows:

·        To keep you updated with the latest information and developments within ASEASA ;

·        To update members on national assessment matters related to, for example SAQA, DOE, Umalusi and HEQC;

·        To share some thoughts and ideas on topical assessment and evaluation matters;

·        To create opportunities for success stories to be shared (from a range of assessors);

·        To give assessment experts an opportunity to be profiled and to share their views and wisdom with members;

·        To serve as a communication medium for ASEASA members who would like to communicate important or interesting information to fellow members and associates;

·        To provide any other relevant information to members as we deem appropriate.

Since this is the first Newsletter, we regarded it appropriate to (re-) introduce the ASEASA Executive Committee (EXCO) members to you, as well as the Extended Management Committee members. We are planning to put a photo of all these members on the ASEASA website as soon as it is properly up and running again.

The EXCO members are as follows:

1. President: Dr. Johan Van Koller (University of Johannesburg)

2. Vice President: Dr. Moses Makgato (Tshwane University of Technology)

3. Vice President: Dr. Paul Coetser (Sedaven High School)

4. Treasurer: Dr. Fred Shaw (Dawn View High School)

5. Secretary: Ms. Chantelle Kleynhans (University of Johannesburg)

6. Additional Exco member: Ms. Sophie Maake (Tshwane University of Technology)

The Extended Management Committee include the above members as well as the following members:

7. Prof. Lukas Meyer (University of the North-West)

8. Prof. Jane Spowart (University of Johannesburg)

9. Dr. Denise Barry (University of Johannesburg) )

10. Dr. Maretha Gous (University of Johannesburg)

11. Mrs. Ros Janisch (Independent Examinations Board)

12. Mr. Sampie Lundie (University of the North-West)

13. Mr. Peter Beets (Stellenbosch University)

We hope to be sending our next communication to you by 15 January 2006.

Sincerely

Johan van Koller

ASEASA PRESIDENT
